SEWING - Totoro Costume

Trick or treat!

This year is probably the last time I get to choose Freya's halloween costume.  Last year I made her a mermaid costume.  (It was adorable!  See last week's post for pictures and details.)  This time I chose Totoro from the Studio Ghibli anime "My Neighbor Totoro."  I love most anime, especially those by Hayao Miyazaki.  Totoro is one of my favorites.  He is cute, soft, cuddly, mellow, loves umbrellas, acorns, and can make plants grow.  He is pretty magical and incredible.  To make the Totoro costume I followed this tutorial.  The directions are very straight forward and she has a lot of pictures to help with the grey areas.  The only tricky part was putting the elastic in around the wrists and ankles.  Since they are so tiny, it was difficult to get them under the sewing machine.  If I were to make it again, I might leave out the elastic and simply hem it.  The other tough part was getting Freya to try it on for her fittings.  The hat ended up being a little large.  The bodysuit will fit her for only this winter, but the hat might fit for at least ten more years.  I guess that is ok.  Maybe during the next ten years she will learn to enjoy wearing hats.  Also about the hat, the ears will not stand up.  I followed the directions the tutorial gave to make them stand up, but it did not work.  I am guessing that I did not stuff them enough.  I did not feel like taking them off and trying again.  Better luck next time!

Just so you know, the last picture is Freya using the tail and a seat cushion.  She cracks me up!  I thought last year's costume was great, but I think I love this one even more!  They just keep getting cuter every year.  I wonder what she will want to be next year.

Happy Halloween!
