KNIT - Stocking

This year's big Christmas project was to knit a stocking for Freya.  My mum made me a stocking and I want to do the same for my daughter.  While working on this project I found out that Jake does not have his own heirloom stocking.  I will have to find another pattern I love and make him one for next year.

I found the pattern on Ravelry and thought it was perfect.  Knitting it was a lot easier than I expected.  I have done some dabbling in color work so this was no big deal, especially when two colors is the most used at one time.  I started the stocking in October thinking I would need all the time I could give myself, but I finished it within a couple weeks.  It was very satisfying to knit because the designs slowly revealed themselves, motivating me and becoming addictive.  After completing the project, I blocked it (pinning it into the shape I wanted, I don't have a sock form that huge- I don't have any sock forms actually) and since we don't have a fireplace or mantel of any kind, I hung it by the Christmas tree.  I was a little alarmed at how enormous the finished stocking is.  It is almost as tall as Freya.  I used worsted weight yarn when it called for DK and I bumped my needles up one size.  I was not surprised that it turned out large, I just was not expecting it that large.  I was originally intending it for Freya and was going to embroider her name on the top, but now I am not so sure.  I do not want to commit myself to filling that monster with presents every year.  I will either keep it as a decorative stocking or sell it to anyone who is interested.  I really like it and am in love with the colors and motifs.  If I do not keep the stocking, I may simply try again with the appropriate yarn and needle sizes, perhaps even smaller.

Have a Merry Christmas!
